Luxury bus hits FRSC official to death in Ogun

Death, as I have earlier noted on this blog, is no respecter of anyone; either those who tried to stop it or those who intentionally venture into it. And so it was that aofficial of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Sunday lost his life while controlling traffic along the Ososa River, in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun.

The deceased, Olasoji Olaleye, an orphan, was said to have been hit by the luxury bus heading to Lagos from the East and he fell into the river. One of the colleagues of the deceased, who preferred anonymity, said that Olaleye was on the bridge controlling the towing of vehicles that were earlier involved in an accident before the impatient driver hit him into the river.

"He was directing vehicles coming from Ijebu-Ode axis to pass through the opposite lane alongside other security agents before the luxury bus driver who was on top speed hit him and he fell into the river,’’ said the eyewitness.

Ayobami Omiyale, the state Sector Commander of FRSC described the incident as shocking and sad. ``How will a man called to come and save lives lost his own life in the discharge of his duties.’’? ``This is sad and terrible,” he said. Omiyale, however, described the incident as the ``high level of sacrifice that one can pay for his fatherland.’’

Also speaking on the incident, ThankGod Obijiaku, Divisional Police Officer of Obalende in Ijebu Ode, said that the luxury bus driver also attempted to knock down a policeman before killing the FRSC official. Obijiaku said that the luxury bus driver who was on a top speed refused to stop when he was ordered to by security agencies before killing the FRSC official.

The DPO said that the bus driver was rescued from being mobbed and had been detained at the Police Station. It was learnt that the late road safety officer was as an orphan who joined the service mid-2011.

He was said to have left behind his wife and two children with the youngest being two months old. Meanwhile, Mr Hamsat Tommy, the Ijebu Zonal Commander of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said that the accident which the late FRSC man was controlling occurred at Ososa bridge at 6.57 a.m.

He said that the luxury bus driver was waved down but refused to stop before knocking down the FRSC man who fell from the bridge into the river.

May God console the families of the deceased.
